Branding and ecommerce website design for Bridport Arts Centre creative writing competition

The Bridport Prize – the Bridport Art Centre’s widely respected global creative writing competition – contacted us to help refresh their branding and to create a beautiful new website that would make entering the competition easy for writers, and help cut down their administrative work behind the scenes too.

Branding

Our starting point on this project was to concentrate on a new visual identity for the Bridport Prize. Everyone involved felt that it needed to be simple, creative and colourful and inspire action and hope. We came up with a simplistic, colourful identity that is instantly recognisable and also gave us the ability to colour code each of the different categories for the writing competition itself.

Design

Once we had a clear direction for the branding we moved on to create a completely bespoke website design for the writing competition, enabling entrants to easily navigate from the homepage by either scrolling the homepage banner and category headings to their chosen competition category or clicking the “enter now” graphic over on the right side.

As you scroll down the homepage we feature a testimonial from a past winner, latest news, information about this years judges and helpful resources to help potential entrants.

The writing competition itself is made up of four different categories (each colour coded), so entrants can read about previous winners and the competition prizes on offer and click through to submit their entry. Entering the competition is also prompted again when the user hits the bottom of the category page too.

Once the user decides to enter, the entry page itself guides them through the process of entering one or multiple categories. We made this a step-by-step process and introduced some checkboxes that users must confirm before they’re able to upload their work – thus reducing the number of submitted entries that don’t adhere to the competition’s rules. Once all the steps are completed the user is then able to pay via PayPal or WorldPay and behind the scenes, an order is created and the entries they uploaded are sent to Dropbox, where they are categorised and automatically shared with the judge for the categories they have entered.

Fully Responsive

As with every new website, this writing competition website needed to be easily accessible on both desktop and mobile.  Although stats from the previous site told us that the majority of people entering their writing would be doing so on a laptop or desktop computer, we still made sure that the website would adjust beautifully on mobile devices and provide a seamless browsing experience.

Maintenance & Ongoing Support

We thoroughly enjoyed working alongside The Bridport Prize on this exciting and important global creative writing competition and are delighted to be continuing to support the new website with our monthly website maintenance cover.
